After the most recent sanctions put on the isolated nation, the North Korean government claims that those sanctions will only persuade them to accelerate their nuclear program. The Presidents of the United States and China have committed to maximizing pressure on the country. North Korea fired their latest missile on Friday right after new UN resolutions were enacted to "starve the government from fuel and income." However, these sanctions have not been received equally among the world with Russia condemning the sanctions as "aggressive rhetoric" from the US government. The North Korean government has responded by promising fury for the sanctions that have taken place.
The sanctions that have been enacted are in my opinion, necessary for the safety of the world. While North Korea talks a big talk saying that the sanctions will only propel their nuclear program, in reality they will hurt to nation's power. Without a stable economy, the country will not be able to sustain a high level nuclear arsenal. However it is troubling that not all of the UN Security Council is on the same page for how to respond to the ever tightening situation. If we can't all agree with what to do, then North Korea will be left to continue ramping up their nuclear arsenal.

Shayne, if you had to put a number on it, what do you think are the odds of nuclear war in our lifetime? Like, 30%, 60%? What's your take?
ReplyDeleteOkay, this wasn't directed towards me, but hopefully we don't experience ANY nuclear war in our lifetime. North Korea seems to be all talk, but Kim's immaturity is scary, so I would say there's a 25% chance for war (???).
ReplyDeleteNorth Korea is so unpredictable that it's frustrating and horrifying. The idea of them starting nuclear war is a possibility, but there is also the chance that they are doing all these tests and threats just for a major bluff. Either way, it is almost impossible to figure out what their true motives are...
