Summary:
The event happen on July 26. A woman by the name of Alex Wubbels was arrested after denying a police officer to have her draw blood from a crash victim,William Gray. The crash was caused by a person fleeting from officers. William Gray was on his lane when he was crash into by the fleeting person. He was issued into the University of Utah Hospital, were Ms. Wubbels was put in charge of the now unconscious victim. One of the officers came in and explain to Ms. Wubbels that they needed a blood sample from the victim. The nurse explained to Mr. Payne, the officer, that she couldn't do that because 1.they didn't have a warrant, 2.they weren't arresting the victim, or 3.the victim wasn't conscious to give consent. The police officer then presided to arrest the nurse for interfering with an investigation. MS.Wubbles preceded to scream and panic, she was sat in a police car for about 40 minutes. After the release of the nurse, her lawyers and the police department talk for a changing in the system. Nothing happen though, so this caused her to release the video footage. Since then the police department of Utah and the Salt Lake City Mayor have issued an apology. There is now an investigation for Detective/ police officer Jeff Payne.
Analysis:
The purpose for this article is to shed light of the over powerment that some officers have to the law. I feel that Alex Wubblers is very brave for standing up from the law. She understood the importance of the patient in this instance. If I was in her position I don't know what I would have done. as for the officer that arrest her, I hope that the investigation shows us what was going on with him and if he had done this sort of thing before.

ReplyDeleteI hope that the officers were genuine with their apology and that they consider changing the system rather then apologizing and returning to their system.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that there are officers who see themselves fit enough to bypass the law. Especially in a time were our president has decided what laws he wishes to live by and Social unrest is rising, along with the deaths of Hurricane Harvey. People are in pain and don't feel safe and right now we need a law that protects us.
ReplyDeleteI think it's so admirable how the nurse knew for a fact that her duty in that situation was to protect her patient as she had been instructed in her years of training and I can't understand why the officer could be so ignorant when I'm sure she informed him more than once of what protocol allowed and didn't allow her to do. Maybe some context is missing but she was totally justified to do what she did.
ReplyDeleteAren't officers "of the law" supposed to know and act in ways that are legal? It genuinely baffles me how police officers act as if they are above the law and I hope this ends in real legal action, to send a message to others and prevent future incidents.
ReplyDeleteI'm very surprised that despite the fact that the nurse was allegedly harmed by the officer, she didn't give in to what he demanded. She did what was right by following the rules of the hospital; the cop should have respected that she was abiding by the hospitals "law" but instead he abused his power. I find it very disturbing that the people we call for help -in case of an emergency's- are the people who treat others with no respect. How is the public suppose to trust officers to help us when when we are in constant fear of their brash behavior.
ReplyDeleteMs.Wubbles did the right thing in not allowing the officers to draw blood from the victim without the proper requirements, however I wish I could have heard some commentary from the unconscious victim.
ReplyDeletePolice officers have a duty of protecting citizens and enforcing the rights of law, so reading a report about an officer harassing a nurse for such a poor reason highly disappoints me. Officers are figures of authority and trust, so considering that even they make rash decisions is horrifying.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that the nurse stayed with the patient's rights and refused to have their blood drawn even AFTER she was harassed for doing the right thing. This is just another example of cops abusing power. I think the nurse was definitely the bigger person in not pressing charges after being treated like that.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I agree. It's definitely a power play with the cops. Their minds are instinctively set to attack, because violence is their nature. It's a messed up and scary system!

ReplyDeleteprops to the nurse for following the rules and sticking with her patient, a big shame on that police officer that obviously could not control himself like a decent human being. i really do hope that the officer at least lies awake at night knowing that he did was the wrong thing.
