Climate Change

As you probably already know we have been struck by two devastating hurricanes and are preparing for a third. These travesties have caused many people to look towards climate change as a cause. This however, is false. Climate change did not cause Harvey or Irma. Despite this shocking news, climate change did cause these hurricanes to be more depricating. Due to global warming, the temperature of the sea has risen approximately 3 degrees in the past century. Hurricanes flourish over warm waters. The sea level has also risen drastically. Prolonged rainfall has also caused deadly flooding. Scientists have studied these cases and determined quickly that climate change was a deadly catalyst, making these situations at least 40% more likely to occur. Climate change has caused these storms to be much deadlier and stronger than they have ever been in the past. Although it did not specifically start these storms, it made them much worse than they had to be.

Written by CNN's Wayne Drash, and updated at 1:12 pm on September 15, this article holds a terrifying truth. This article is targeted to highlight the devastating effects climate change can have. I had previously thought that climate change instigated these storms, but upon reading this article I learned the truth. Although it's not the cause, it's devastating to know that our actions have made the storms so much worse than they would've been, say, a century ago. This article is trying to convey the gravity of climate change. Although it's been highly debated, there is no denying the effects that climate change has had on our world. We can't deny it any longer.
