First Responders Unable to Answer 911 Calls Due to Hurricane Irma
In the wrath of Hurricane Irma, even first responders have been hindered. First responders have been prohibited from taking 911 calls. Given the conditions of Irma, sending first responders out could possibly create more chaos and travesty. If something happened to them, as the situation is very high risk, they could need others to rescue them, thus piling onto the disaster. This situation is highly frustrating for the first responders, who can see the incoming 911 calls on a monitor. They are faced with the painful truth that they won't be able to help those in need. The sadness is overwhelming for them, especially considering this is the thing they want to do most.
Written by Elizabeth Cohen and Debra Goldschmidt of CNN this article brings to light the devastating effects of Hurricane Irma. Not only the drastic flooding and winds, but how that affects our daily lives and independent health. This article was updated today at 1:55 PM. The events of Irma are still unfolding. I knew how devastating Irma has been and will be, but I had no idea the toll it was taking even on first responders. This article is so important because we and even the victims of the hurricane need to be aware of the severity. These first responders can only choose a select few, if that, to help. From cardiac arrests to delivering children, there is much commotion aside from that of the hurricane. These dire situations are very difficult not only on victims, but on those who help the victims.

Not being able to call 911 when you are in trouble can be life-threatening. But I'm the emergency response units are doing everything they can to help those in need. The faster they fix the 911 system the more lives they can save.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure it's a matter of fixing the 911 systems. I think it has more to do with the fact that the authorities answering 911 calls would hurt more people than it would save them.
DeleteDo you think having more experience after having two Category 4 Hurricanes in the span of two weeks will help us be prepared in the future? Do you think the first responders will be better prepared the next time a natural disaster of this magnitude happens?
ReplyDeleteNot being able to call 911 makes my stomach ache! I cant even imagine how scary that must've been for everyone! I hope everyone can stay as safe as possible!!!
ReplyDeleteIt is so sad to hear that those who are wanting to and supposed to help are not even capable of doing so: due to the seriousness of conditions the hurricane has created. It must be terrifying for the people on the other end in need of rescue.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Kendall, it must be really nerve wrecking to be in that situation-- feeling helpless. Especially those who lost all of their belongings and even some of their loved ones.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing most people think of when in danger is calling 911, and if that wasn't an option, I believe that it would create more chaos.
