Lane Ford - Don't expect Hurricane Harvey to change President Trump

Summary: Due to the devastating path of destruction Hurricane Harvey left in its wake, Congress is setting up budgeting plans in order to meet the nation's critical needs. Many congressional Republicans are hoping that this disaster will prompt President Trump to focus his energy on Harvey rather than dismantling the DACA program (a program allowing young adults who came to the country as children to stay and have work authorization) and building the border wall. Unfortunately, it seems as if Pres. Trump will not be heading in that direction, based on both previous scenarios in the American government and his presidental style.

Response: I agree that Trump's style and priorities will not change. He has shown us who he is. Sadly, even a horrific and catastrophic event like Hurricane Harvey won't change what his ultimate goal is, which has always been the Wall, even before his presidency. The way he goes about dealing with problems is irrational, aggressive and very laser-focused. Because of that, combined with the simple fact that we've had similar events happen in the past (9/11) where the political divisions and dynamics remained even more divided, leads me to believe that not only will Hurricane Harvey not change Donald Trump but in terms of the greater picture, it won't change the fundamental dynamics in Washington, D.C.

  1. It's really unfortunate that not even that devastating of an event would go over our president's head. As his presidency continues it seems there's only one thing he seems to care about:himself.

  2. When Trump first became president I had hoped that the reality of his new job title would hit him and that he may pull it together and unfortunately this doesn't seem to be the scenario. And one might say that his head stronge attitude could've been a great boost of confidence for America but now that possibly is gone with his regard for human life.

  3. I agree with you, about how his styles/ priorities will not change. Trump seems to try to direct certain speeches towards a certain crowd, but after this situation maybe more eyes will be opened to what sort of person he truly is.

  4. It's sad how even after an extreme catastrophe like this has occurred, Trump proceeds to go towards his selfish priorities. I definitely agree that the way he deals with problems is irrational and in need of serious refinement.
