Current Events: Hurricane Irma
Hurricane Irma is one of the strongest, most powerful atlantic storms ever recorded. It has left a path of destruction throughout the Caribbean and is now hitting Florida. Millions of people were ordered to evacuate to the north, and millions of people are left without power. There has also been a death toll of 4 in Florida. Currently the water in Miami is waist deep, and the streets are beginning to look like rivers. The Florida keys are expecting about 15 feet of flooding.
I am just thankful that hurricane Irma is not as terrible as hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 that was the most costly hurricane that has ever hit the atlantic. I feel that people were more prepared for Irma because the damage from Katrina was so devastating with a death toll of 1,833. Irma and Katrina are both very close in wind speeds but Katrina seemed to cause much more damage so at least we have learned how to better prepare for hurricanes.
I feel like by the time Irma has passed, the damage will be equivalent or worse than Katrina. Although they had less time to prepare for Katrina, Irma's path has changed so many times, people don't know what to expect anymore. As a result of Irma, 6 tornadoes have touched down in Florida and they left even more damage on top of Irma's.
ReplyDeleteI agree because with our more advanced technology, we can better understand Irma, we just have to wait now to see if Irma will match up to hurricane katrina in the aftermath.
ReplyDeletei agree with katelyn... we do have more technology to see how high the winds are and keep up with it... i just hope it doesnt match katrina also
ReplyDeleteThere needs to be more eyes on the weather these days. I think that we need to protect the coasts of our country, because at any moment, the oceans could just turn and create huge amounts of flooding.
