Trump & DACA | Ariel C

In the US today, President Trump has reported that he wants to end the DACA program that currently protects 800,000 undocumented immigrants from deportation, most of which are students that are trying to better their lives by studying to get well paying jobs. The DACA program, also known as the dreamer program was created by Obama in 2012, to protect children from getting deported out of the country. Obama stated that since the children didn't have a choice to come to the US as a child they shouldn't be deported.
Even though trump is removing the program he stated that he will allow them to live here just as long as there work contracts allow. Many young immigrants are bracing themselves for the possibility that the program will be discontinued. The DACA was a pretty controversial part of the 2016 election.
If trump carries this out thousands of people could lose their jobs. The longest one of the dreamers could stay after the law would be dismantled would be 2 years if there work contract would last that long. Although the fate of these students is not yet set in stone most of them should start making plans on what to do after they cannot remain in this country.

  1. President Trump hasn't actually reported or stated what he intends to do officially. The news of his expected intentions comes from two sources "familiar with his thinking". He's in quite the situation, as either he makes a decision to end DACA tomorrow and give Congress an amount of time to create something in place and as protection perhaps equivalent to DACA for its members, or some conservative attorneys will follow through with their threat to sue and file a lawsuit claiming that the creation of DACA was illegal in that it was not formed legislatively. I just really hope the President fully understands the weight of his decision to act or not to act with the lives of people who put their trust in our government to protect them and are now in jeopardy for doing so.
