This is a sad story. Last September there was a drive by shooting in Chicago, where five people got shot, including a baby, Princeton, his pregnant mom, and grandmother. Two police officers made their way to the chaotic scene. A woman ran up to the officers, with Princeton bleeding in her arms, and said that he'd been shot. The officers broke standard protocol and made a split second decision to rush the baby to the hospital themselves, instead of waiting for an ambulance. Officer Modzelewski said that there was a feeling of helplessness, but you still felt like you had to help. He cradled the baby in the back of the car while his partner drove the 9 miles to the hospital. They called ahead so the hospital was ready when they got there. In the end Princeton was saved, but his mom, unborn sibling, and grandmother did not survive.
The officers have been very humble about this whole thing. They are being called heroes, rightfully so, but downplay any praising, coming from it. Their supervisors agreed to pardon them for violating policy because, in the end, it saved a life. If they weren't excused, I have a feeling this would be a very different article. This situation reminds me of Sergeant Patrick Hildenbrand who pulled over a man who was speeding. He realized later that it was because the guy's 22 month old son was choking. Hildenbrand rushed them to the hospital in his own squad car and performed CPR, saving the boy's life. It's always nice to see such heroic articles, but devastating that they had to come out of such a violent and fatal situation.
