North Carolina New Law? - Tea Devereaux

The governor of North Carolina recently passed a law under Republican-controlled legislature that eliminated anti-discrimination protections for gay, lesbian, and transgender individuals, and this would ultimately develop tension expressed by multiple civil rights groups during rallies and on social media. The core of this law lies at the ripple effect from the ongoing election process, but this further divides America based on firmly held beliefs. I personally believe that the passing of this bill is wrong and promotes discrimination that is counter-productive to the reform posed by the legalization of gay marriage and the acceptance of the diversity that composes America. Although there are valid points brought up such as discomfort by some individuals towards the presence of a transgender in a bathroom, what I find astonishing is the law also strips veterans of protection laws.

This law prohibits municipalities from protecting the rights of gay, lesbian, transgenders, and veterans, and I feel the inclusion of veterans is to mask a highly anti-gay bias law. During WWII, gay people were accepted into the military and this war would also spawn gay and lesbian rights activists as they were accepted into society, but this backlash reminded me of the McCarthy era witch hunts for Communists that also discriminated those who were gay and lesbian in order to promote anti-gay sentiment and remove individuals from positions and jobs. The passing of this law and the recently vetoed bill in Georgia serve to remind us that gender discrimination is an ongoing issue despite the recent reforms to prevent discrimination, and I believe the involvement of veterans in this law is wrong because this prejudice will result in further backlash from civil rights activists.
