Worls Tuberculosis Day, Darby McMahon Pd#9

Globally, TB kills more than a million people a year. While the disease can be treated, it still mutates into non resistant forms. This ancient disease still claims 4,000 lives a day. and requires constant pill taking to possibly cure. TB and HIV are similar in a number of ways including the pill taking, and the way it affects the human body. There needs to be a hightened urgency for the cure of both diseases, treatments will not work alone. TB spreads from person to person through the air. If we could improve indoor air quality and sanitation, the spreading would be minimalized. Currently there is no effective TB vaccine, and treating the disease is a long, complicated task. Political leadership is needed now to stress the urgency of a TB free world.

This article written by Linda Bekker, CNN, helps to raise awareness for the cure of Tuberculosis. Before reading the article I had no idea that this ancient disease was so deadly. I liked the way the article compaired TB to HIV, to enforce the severity of TB. From the very outset in early 1980, the community demanded HIV to be a priority. This momentum from then carries on the movement today. It is important for the public to recognize the abundant, and deadly disease that is TB, and rally for political and communal support.
