Two towns that are run by officials who are also connected with the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), Colorado City in Arizona and Hildale in Utah, were found guilty of violating the constitutional rights of people who lived in their towns but were not members of the same church. Most of the people who live in both towns are polygamous members of the FLDS church, and the town's officials didn't provide non-members with some of the cities basic services like water hookups and police protection. Six of the towns non FLDS members sued the towns governments. Along with the federal courts decision to find the town officials guilty of violating the citizens' constitutional rights, they were ordered to pay the six people who sued them 2.2 million dollars. However, a settlement was agreed to that means the towns will pay 1.6 million dollars. The US Labor Department is also trying to hold the church and the town government responsible for breaking child labor laws, and ignoring other crimes like food stamp fraud and marriages between adults and minors.
