Patrick Greene, an atheist in Corpus Christi, Texas, has recently threatened to sue city officials for supporting the planting of a giant cross on the property of a local church. In addition, he is considering suing the church. He complained that the fact that the mayor and members of the city council attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the cross violated their oaths of office. Greene references the Texas Constitution's Bill of Rights. He also called for an apology from the officials. City attorney Miles Risley believes that they did nothing wrong by attending the ceremony and he believes the cross will draw attention to the city.
To me, Patrick Greene should not be complaining or suing anyone. I get why he is upset, but the cross was built on the grounds of a church. I feel like that is the equivalent of him getting upset about the building of a Church. Just because he does not have the same beliefs of that of a Christian Church doesn't mean he has to feel attacked and get angry. This reminds me of the colonial era. That era was basically characterized by the conflicting religious groups. For example, the Puritans in the Massachusetts Bay Colony exiled people like Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams for having opposing or radical views.

I agree with you, I don't think he should be complaining. He does have the right to believe in what he chooses, but other people do too.
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree. Our bill of rights guarantees the freedom of religion so why does he even care? Does it personally affect him? No! Then he should mind his own business and spend his time worrying about something more worthwhile!
ReplyDeleteIt's on a church's property, and it's not on his property. Why is he complaining?
ReplyDeleteMatthew Homsher 9th- It's not like they stuck the thing on his front lawn. He needs to take a chill pill.
