Mizzou instructor tells students to stay home
Bradley Harrison Smith, an English professor at the University of Missouri, cancelled his class on Friday, November 11 to show support for his students of color who have been facing racial injustice on campus. Mizzou has been in the news for months due to their racial issues. After writing a letter to his students and posting on Facebook about the dangers colored students face on campus, Bradley announced that he would not continue his class as scheduled. As a result, the campus was very quiet on Friday, as students took their professor's advice by not attending class.
Although some would consider racism to be an issue of the past, it is most definitely an active issue our country and world should strive to fix. With social media, injustice is heightened and taken to the extreme by those speaking behind a cell phone or computer screen. I fear that racism will get to the levels it was in the 60's if we don't push for change. Articles like this one and people like Bradley Harrison Smith will be history makers for our children because they go against the norm and stand up for what they believe is right, which is exactly what Civil Rights activists did 50+ years ago. Our generation is having our own little Civil Rights Movement and with the technology we have, I know we can accomplish change like our predecessors. However, I hope our generation maintains change and doesn't allow for injustice for anyone, any longer.
