Alexis Farrell, 5th Period: Black Friday 2015 Fights

The article describes several fights over simple items that occurred during Black Friday this year. Many of these fights led to injuries such as a sprained ankle and several black eyes. Additionally, all of these fights were somehow filmed by someone which could hurt the victim or even the initiator of the brawl if it became viral. Herbert also mentions that during the filming of some videos, people were screaming "Worldstar!!" which is a hip hop website that makes "funny" videos by combining fight videos together. Retailers did expect large crowds but this might not have been there idea of that.

In my opinion, this is not the way that America should be getting into the Christmas spirit! Our view of Christmas shopping has been altered over the years because of this craze for Black Friday. Yes, people enjoy good deals on items, but this is definitely not the way to get that good deal. Instances like these show how materialistic our society has gotten and how people will stop at nothing to get that TV for 50% off. On Friday morning, my uncle went out to buy a chair for my grandpa because he knew he would get a good deal on it but later that day he ended up in the hospital because he got trampled in the furniture store. This was a completely selfless act on my uncle's part but he was the one that ended up in the hospital. In the past, people were trading to get the next best thing but I would've never thought that would turn into this.

  2. Black Friday shoppers have gotten completely out of hand and I agree it's sad that Americans have come to this.

  3. This is crazy. The people video-ing the fights could have been helping instead of filming.

  4. I find news like this to be very disappointing. It's almost funny to me how right after we have Thanksgiving (a day focused on being grateful for what you have) people rush out and get into fights over items on sale, revealing their selfishness and desire for more things. -Nicole Chatham 6th period

  5. Oh my goodness! I completely agree with Nicole! Right after Thanksgiving, people rush out that night or even evening to go out and get the best thing, because they HAVE to have it.

  6. its outrageous how far people take black friday! its only a shopping day where over priced things go down to regular price! i wish people weren't as aggressive to get what they want. :(
