Teen sues Obama over climate change - Kate Fehan 8th Period

15 year old Xiuhtezcatl Tonatiuh and several other young climate change activists are suing the Obama administration over failure to get rid of fossil fuels. Obama's push for clean energy has reduced carbon emissions, but not by enough. At the rate the world is warming, Tonatiuh argues that we need to do away with fossil fuels completely.

America has been very dependent on fossil fuels since the Industrial Revolution, and the amount we're using just started to decrease in 2000. We're still using 35 quadrillion times the amount of petroleum that we were in 1900 and 20 quadrillion times the amount of coal. Climate change is no longer a problem we can leave to younger generations. The rising sea level and temperature is starting to affect civilization now, with lasting consequences.

  1. Wow, it's great to see people our own age taking such a big stand for our planet. But the road to completely getting rid of fossil fuels is a long one. Hopefully this person's voice will be heard by the administration and action is taken

  2. I agree with these kids that fossil fuels do need to be replaced, but I disagree with them in the sense that there really aren't many energy sources currently that could generate enough power to sustain us long term and are also cost effective. Fossil fuels are indeed terrible for the environment and I do think that we should get rid of them as soon as possible lest we end up in some Mad Max like future, but I don't think these people should have blamed Obama for this. He's probably doing as much he can.

  3. I saw this article as well and while I agree with the kid the article cnn posted it's self is misleading. He personally didn't sue Obama he joined a lawsuit someone else had filed as a member of those involved in the lawsuit. While I do think Obama hasn't done enough that doesn't mean this lawsuit will be successful at all.
