Protesters Disrupt Chicago Shopping // Olivia Gillis P3

On Black Friday, protesters marched on Chicago's famous Michigan Avenue and demanded the resignations of the top leaders of the city. These protesters were asserting a cover-up of a police video portraying an officer's killing of teenager, Laquan McDonald. The protesters locked arms outside the doors of major retailers (Tiffany & Co., Neiman Marcus, etc.) to prevent shoppers from entering the stores. In order to leave the stores, shoppers would have to knock on the glass and ask for protesters' permission to let them out. Demonstrators chanted phrases like, "Stop the cover up!" and "16 shots! 16 shots!". On Saturday, shopping on Michigan Avenue returned to it's usual state but, figures of authority say that more marches will be held in the next few days.
Although I agree that the incident with the officer and McDonald was very terrible and wrong, I don't think it was right of the protesters to bring innocent shoppers into the situation. Those who want to protest should do so and defend what they feel is right but, it was incredibly unnecessary to disturb those who were just minding their own business.

  1. Yes I completely agree with you. If people want to protest, it should be done without disturbing the peace and in a calmer manner.

  2. I agree with both of you, let the crazy Black Friday shoppers continue to go crazy. You can protest without their involvement. This cover up is so devastating and just shows how much work needs to be done in the police system. Not all police are like this but it is very clear that some of them are and need to be stopped.
