"Black Pastors Expected to Endorse Donald Trump" By Lisl Wangermann 1st Period

Alan Rappeport's article, "Black Pastors Expected to Endorse Donald Trump" was published by the New York Times on November 25, 2015. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is expected to receive an endorsement from a coalition of African American pastors in the near future. This seems to be a response to the general opinion that Trump has caused racial tension after tweeting inaccurate facts about crimes based on race. Additionally, an activist for Black Lives Matter was beaten up at a Trump rally this past week. The coalition of pastors are led by Darrell Scott, who had a private meeting with Trump and has spoken very positively about him since.

This event directly correlates to the era of reconstruction following the Civil War. Freedmen were severely mistreated in the South after the end of the Civil War even after the thirteenth and fourteenth amendments were passed. The fifteenth amendment gave all men the right to vote, regardless of race, and although it was not immediately recognized throughout the South, African Americans are now a very important part of the voting population. Trump is trying to gain their support through this endorsement, and it will be interesting to see how effective it is.

  1. Sounds sort of phony to me. I hope they aren't being bribed, and I hope if they are actually throwing their support behind him, that he in someway reflects some of the pastors ideals. I doubt he does, but that's what I hope.

  2. Trump seems like a good persuader, and he can word things to people to change their opinions about him.
