Tymie Jadagu Obama on Thanksgiving 6th P

article:Obama on Thanksgiving: Calls troops, offers refugees welcome - CNNPolitics.com

Summary: In President Obama's recent Thanksgiving address, he welcomed refugees and thanked troops for their service. In light of the recent terrorist attacks, many on the scale of accepting refugees go from apprehensive, to full out in opposition of it. Obama highlights that the refugees have to go through extreme background checks to be allowed into our country, that it was this way before Paris, and is still the same way now. He makes an analogy between the pilgrims who this holiday began from. and how they in a way were refugees too. He also thanks the troops for fighting for our freedom so that we may enjoy our thanksgiving.
Analysis: I think Obama did something really cool, by making the connection that the very people who founded our country came from Great Britain. I think it is a bit ironic, that when the colonists immigrated here, most were not accepted by the natives. It's kind of the sane situation when people from other places immigrate here, and are faced with discrimination, and ridicule, like muslims. I feel like as long as they are going through good enough background checks they should be allowed into our country. If you actually see the conditions they are facing right now, you'd have to be heartless not wanting to give them the help they need.

  1. I agree, it's a good point that the first people to colonize America were immigrants. I don't see why we can't take in immigrants, if we have the room and resources, and as long as they are coming here with the appropriate checks they should be able to stay here until they are allowed to return home. -Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex

  2. I believe that background checks are very worthwhile. This country wouldn't be at all how it is without immagration and refugees that enhance our culture and make America what it is.

  3. Seriously, people call New York the melting pot of the world because so many different types of people live there, but honestly on a world wide scale it's true of America too. I hope that we continue to let these people into our country and that we're able and willing to give them the resources that they need to get through this time in their lives.

  4. The discrimination against immigrants really is unnecessary because at the end of the day we're all immigrants. Its really is a petty argument. | Jillian Linnear P.8
