Madelynn Northcutt-Wyly, Period 6 Lakewood Theater

Lakewood Theater

The two co-owners, Bill Willingham and Craig Kinney, of the Lakewood Theater want to tear down the 77-year old historic building.  Many people who live in the Lakewood area see this theater as a landmark for Dallas.  Inside the theater there are works of art from active Dallas artist that they believe don't deserve to be in a dumpster.  One of the owners, Kinney, has told Lakewood that they aren't going to completely destroy the building or artwork, but neighbors have driven by and seen valuable items in the trash.  The neighbors want rights to reserve the building as an historic sight for future generations to experience what they have gotten to over the years.  They have created an online petition, that has already gotten thousands of names, to try and save the Lakewood Theater.

  1. I'm for preserving the theater. I understand Dallas is constantly growing, expanding, and updating infrastructure daily, but that doesn't mean we have to get rid of our history. Lakewood Theater has been standing for a long time, and it shows films and holds events. It's a source of entertainment as well as a part of Dallas's history I don't think we should just throw out.

  3. I think artwork, no matter where, always has a meaning and is worth saving. Even if one person does not think it deserves to be on a big, fancy wall, someone else might think it belongs in the White House. It is all about opinion and perception. I completely agree that we shouldn't just throw it out.

  4. ART IS NOT TRASH NO MATTER THE QUALITY.

  5. I agree that the theater and the artwork should be preserved. I don't understand why the co-owners want to tear it down?? They should be the biggest advocates for preserving it.

  6. Yes, the building might be old, but it is a historical landmark just like any other type of landmark and the art should be recognized by others, not just disregarded and thrown away.
