Claudia Anthony (3rd period) Sorry Jeb, 'Anchor Babies' is a Slur

Jeb Bush used the term "anchor babies" while referring to U.S.-born children of undocumented immigrants. He doesn't believe that the use of the term was offensive, when in reality it is disgusting slur. He is using to this term to describe fellow American citizens and is belittleing them to nothing more than the legal status of their parents. While Bush usually has a more mild stance on immigration, the author of this article believed that he said this to get the media's attention. Donald Trump has been getting tons of media attention lately because he says many offensive things like this, so Jeb Bush sunk down to Trump's level in order to get noticed more.

I think this reveals so much Jeb Bush's character, not just the fact that he would say say something so offensive, but that he would say it in order to try to get more people to listen to him and less to listen to Donald Trump. This article rightfully points out and explains how offensive Bush's comment was. While he might have been saying this to help himself, I think it only weakened his chance of becoming president. He was saying this to try to please certain people and win their support. Many people have done this throughout history, giving false promises while running for president to get people's votes but once they are president they forget everything they said. Mitt Romney did this during the 2012 election, he said he did not support having a national healthcare, but he had instituted the state healthcare in Massachusetts. He said he did not support it in order to win the support of more people in hope of becoming president.

  1. Many politicians use extreme ignorance like this without knowing it and unfortunately once they are aware of their mistake they refuse to aplogize for it. Another great example of idiocy in our government.

  2. You guys are right, what Bush said was ignorant and racist. It's disgusting to think that politicians like these could come to power in our government, and that there are actually people out there who think like this, and who would support people like this.

  3. Throwing out racial slurs is not the way to earn votes. Being trustworthy and having potentially great ideas earns votes. However, he definitely got the media's (negative, probably not helping his campaign) attention. If he actually meant this, I'd be even more disgusted than I am now. Overall, he probably hurt his chances more than helped with this stunt he pulled.

  4. I agree, that was totally awful for him to say, and unfortunately, it's not necessarily surprising from a politician. They say the most ignorant things sometimes. Also, nothing is really surprising compared to Donald Trump.

  5. I agree with your reason for him saying that. Trump is getting all of the publicity because he has no thought for other people's feelings. I think that the other politicians should use Trump as a "what not to do" example. Even if he is getting more publicity.
