President Trump refuses to aid Puerto Rico - Paola Aceves

Recently Trump has stated that he has no wishes to grant Puerto Rico statehood. According to Trump, this is because of the Mayor of San Juan, Yulin Cruz. He says that she is incompetent and until they find better leaders, they should not be focused on being granted statehood. Cruz is not offended by the statements and rather thinks it is a great honor. She believes this is because he is in part acknowledging that while they were hit by Hurricane Maria. The issue of statehood has been widely controversial in the territory, but only a small minority are opposed to it now.

Another highly controversial statehood was that of Hawaii in 1959. This was controversial due to political differences, such as the evidence it was a communist haven. Another reason was the fear of admitting a state that was governed by a minority. In both cases with Puerto Rico and Hawaii, not being admitted could be seen with little reasonable cause.

  1. I believe the people of Puerto Rico shouldn't suffer because of the difference of political power. Although i love how Yulin Cruz responded to Trumps statement.

  2. If Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, then shouldn't the United States take care/help the people on their (u.s.) land whether they're a state or not?

    1. I feel the U.S. should, and that we have been negligent at best in our treatment of Puerto Rico and the other territories.

  3. There’s no reason for the US to diregard Puerto Rico and their needs because of political differences. It’s ridiculous that people even have that type of mindset. - Ariana Oliver

  4. I find it interesting how puerto rico has political differences that do not suit trump’s wants for it as a state, but when offered as a possible candidate for statehood, he does not wish to help it and put in the effort to make it thrive as a state. - Emma Hancock

  5. Shouldn't the U.S. be helping Puerto Rico since it is a U.S. Territory? I honestly don't understand Trump's logic behind not helping them.

  6. Yeah there’s literally no reason to not admit it as a state it does nothing harmful and probably brings im a fair amount of taxes.

  7. Puerto Rico is still a US Territory, and that means Trump should not by any means ignore it. What he is doing is honestly just ruining his image one thing after another, he is so cold towards those who need help. A good President would help anyone in a time of need no matter their beliefs or his biases.

  8. I thought aid was supposed to be given to citizens of the US and its territories regardless of their beliefs, and Trump's refusal just shows his political bias towards those who do not share his political beliefs.

  9. This is crazy. I am appalled at this Trump does not do anything foe the country at all. He only cares about himself and the way he looks.

  10. It’s unnecessary to deny Puerto Rico statehood, and doesn’t seem like it would harm anyone if they became a state. They’re already a us territory anyway so I don’t see why we shouldn’t let them become a state.

  11. Rose Tharp - We need to aid those that need it. Especially because we still lay claim to Puerto Rico. If we feel the need to keep Puerto Rico from voting on our elections, on not truly allowing them to be in the United States, we should allow aid for the disasters that they suffer through.

  12. Puerto Rico doesn't have the funds to repair Puerto Rico because the U.S government keeps putting them into debt. Since Puerto Rico is in fact a territory, it does not receive state funds even in this desperate time, however, I truly believe that Puerto Rico deserves to be treated with more pride and dignity by the U.S government.
