Rescued Migrants tell of abuse in Libya

Humanitarian Organization Proactive Open Arms rescued 695 migrants along the central mediterranean route in 1 week. They interviewed an 18 year old female who stated, "Libyans don't respect women, not even pregnant women. If they want, they beat you and harm you, and they rope women." The migrants ages 14-17 were most at risk, 9/10 are subject to human trafficking. A man named Souleiman was a victim in this. He was migrating from Algeria to Libya, the people that were transporting him sold him to be a prisoner in Libya without his knowledge. He shares that they were beaten every morning, left without any food for 2 days, and even connected them to electricity. After 1 year of this torment, Souleiman was able to get out due to his family paying 1000$ to the abusers. Although he made it out, many remain there and are still being nearly beaten to death. I believe this is just unjust. These innocent people are being sold into this without their knowledge, and the only reason they are even caught up in this because they are trying to escape from their home lands. They aren't able to keep contact with their family it in astonishing to me that in the year 2018 things like this are still happening. Slavery is still here and relevant, very little action is even being out into getting rid of this. This relates back to the movie 12 years a slave, a black male who had his own home, born free was brought to an event by a white man, the man sold him into slavery without his knowledge. He was beaten and abused for 12 years eventually starting a family with the other slaves, luckily he managed to escape after 12 years I won't spoil but you should watch it, it is based on a true story. This also relates to the Underground Railroad. The underground railroad was a passage helping slaves go north where there was no slavery. The humanitarian society is helping the migrants escape successfully and be free. Hopefully this ends soon.

  1. It sucks that not many people are talking about modern day slavery. This issue needs to urgently be more addressed.
