Jude Holland - Debates Start between Ted Cruz and Beto O'Rourke

Jude Holland

The race for the Texas senate between Ted Cruz and Beto O'Rourke is close, and the recent debate held at SMU in Dallas showed the deep divides between the two candidates. Polls show that the two candidates are within single digits of each other. In Texas, a historically republican state, it would be expected that Cruz would win, but Beto also has a chance, making him the first Democratic representative elected since 1994. On almost every topic brought up, such as immigration, gun control and Trump's presidencey, the two candidates views could not have been bore different.

Analysis: To me, the race for the senate shows two things. One, it further demonstrates the deep divide in our country today, between Democrats and Republicans. Historically in our country, political divided have always been present, especially in times like the Civil War. Once again, a great divide has taken root. During George Washington's 1796 Farewell address, he warned the young country of the danger of national division that two opposing parties could present. This has been the case for centuries, and has been the cause of war, division and hate between many groups of people.  Two, it shows a possible turning point in U.S. politics. A democratic victory could be the start of a democrat majority government, and analysts have predicted a taking back of the house by democrats in November. In a Republican majority government, headed by an extremely republican president, democrats may finally have a chance, even if it starts with a Texas senator.

  1. This is a close race. Truthfully I hope that Ted Cruz wins, but this is a close race and I can't wait to see what happens.

  2. I think the divide in our country of republicans and democrats has gotten too big and is tearing relationships apart, I personally am rooting for Beto to win, but I will not judge anyone for thinking any other than I do.
