Caroline Carter-Linda Brown of Brown v. Board of Education dies at 76

Linda Brown, the Topeka schoolgirl whose father filed the famous lawsuit against the Topeka Board of Education that became Brown v. Board of Education, died yesterday afternoon. The landmark case officially ruled that separate but equal facilities were officially illegal and unequal. The 1954 court case involved several different families trying to achieve equality for their children.

The case of Brown v. Board marked a turning point in American history and in racial equality. It is a hallmark of the Civil Rights Movement of the 50's and 60's. The case has been important in court rulings against segregation and for the rights of minorities across America. Current issues like the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement are similar to that moment in history. Not only are they both instances of black Americans fighting for equality, but they are both times that will not soon be forgotten and have led to other movements (some better than others). The passing of Linda Brown tells us just how long ago Brown v. Board was and how long black people have been fighting inequality. It is important that we realize this and stand in solidarity with and support with our brothers and sisters in their struggle against the prejudice of the powers that be.

  1. Hopefully this being in the news will serve as a reminder of both how far we've come and how far we still have to go in terms of race relations in America

    1. I agree, people assume racism has been fixed already.
