West Virginia Schools Closed - Sam Wood 2-26-18

Every public school in the state of West Virginia closed because all of the teachers went on strike.  They demanded higher pay and better benefits. West Virginia employs nearly 20,000 classroom teachers and about 270,000 students missed school. The governor of West Virginia signed a bill giving teachers a pay raise. The teachers did not think it was enough and it didn't address other areas of concern such as health care.

Teachers work harder than anyone. It is very unfair that the teachers do not get fair pay and health care rights. It is great to see the teachers stand up against this.

  1. While I get why teachers feel the need to go on strike, but I don't understand how they can do that to the children. Teachers have been trusted with the huge responsibility of teaching students, and they are abusing that power, so that no child in a public school in the entire state of West Virginia is learning. I find that a little outrageous. The teachers are benefiting from this, there's no doubt about it, but thinking about all the students who aren't learning what they need to pass the six weeks, the AP test, or the year. I can't help but think the teachers are being somewhat selfish for doing this to the students, even if the state isn't paying them enough for all the time and resources they spend on their job.

  2. I agree with Brooke on this issue. Its unfortunate that some don't feel they are getting enough for the work they put into a job, however they are teachers first and foremost because they want to help the younger generation grow into adults that understand and appreciate the world and all of its many functions. It definitely seems selfish to me that they would put a price on teaching, although I'm glad they got what they wanted out of it at the student's expense.

  4. Yea I agree with everyone else. While they had valid reasons for striking it ultimately hindered the children's education and that's no good.
