A young man was accused of killing 17 people because of openily firing on students and teachers and a high school in Florida, this sadly has been the third mass shooting this year in the U.S.Nikolas Cruz the young man being accused has had a history of mental illness, legally purchased and obtained a AR-15 for the shooting. This attack among others has started a nationwide conversation in regard of the links between violence and gun violence. These are some discussions and facts. Paul Ryan says that it a common misconception though there is a connection with violence and mental illness there is no direct connection between it and GUN violence. He states that only 1 percent of all gun homicides are caused by people serious mental illness. In the washington post and in other outlets they said that there are other shootings that are not considered to be school shootings, like when a man committed suicide in a school parking lot while the school was closed or when a third grader who accidentally fired a police officer’s gun.Trump focused on mental health in his national address  after the parkland shooting, but many have said a restriction would have prevented the “seriously mentally ill” they say from buying guns.Federal law says “ anyone who has been adjudicated as a mental defective of has been committed to any mental institution” can not but a gun. Many states have been checking metal health history but there is still many gaps in the system.Former President Obama  wanted to add another data source to the background check system, but it was opposed by the NRA and the ACLU they said it violate their second amendment. Also disability groups said that it gives negative stigmas about the mental ill.I feel that that the solution to the problem of guns is more gun i feel that there should be a major restriction on guns.
