It seems that we have yet another edition on the list of people who have died in 2016, along with Nancy Reagan. Ray Tomlinson, who created the email in 1971, died at age 74. The article explains the importance of this invention and how it changed communication and contributed greatly to the Internet explosion in the 80s and 90s. Tomlinson was working at a Boston technology firm when he decided to make a way for people to message each other via computers, which was a very new concept back then. He decided to make the "@" sign the symbol before emails. Even though texting is the major form of cellular communication these days, a study showed that in 2013 there were 3.9 billion email accounts, which shows email is still very prominent.

Email doesn't seem like a big deal with all of the other things we can do these days, but it was huge back then. Communication gets more advanced and more convenient as time passes by. The electrical telegraph was also a big deal when it was invented in 1837 by Samuel Morse, and so was the telephone when it was invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell. Who knows what the next invention or innovation in communication will be.

A shame we've lost so many bright people this year.
