Victoria Garza "Nurse with Tuberculosis May Have Exposed Over 1,000, including 350 infants"

Recently, a nurse in Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose California was diagnosed with tuberculosis. 350 infants, 368 parents, and 308 employees have been exposed to it and could have potentially contracted it. Tuberculosis is an airborne disease which is only contagious if the person has an active case. Tuberculosis in infants can be fatal, not only affecting their lungs but potentially spreading through their bloodstream and effecting other organs. They have already begun a screening process to identify any possible cases, but so far no one has tested positive. They are also offering preventative treatments for infants as well as treatments for other patients.

This kind of accident can be extremely harmful, especially considering the small infants. I'm assuming this woman wasn't aware that she had tuberculosis or that she was potentially spreading it to other people. I'm sure if she or the hospital were aware of it, they wouldn't have allowed her to come. Still, I think there should be some sort of regulation to make sure employees are healthy to ensure the safety of the patients. This is similar to the Englishmen who unknowingly brought disease to the Indians when they first came to the New World.

  1. That's so sad that some of those babies could now have a fatal illness! I'm sure the woman had no clue she had tuberculosis but it is sad that she had to be working in a field where she could harm hundreds of others.
