Gunman kills doctor, then himself, at VA hospital in El Paso, Texas- Joe Katinas

Today, one person died when a gunman opened fire at the VA Health Care System in El Paso, Major General Stephen M. Twitty told reporters.

"The alleged shooter is dead, and we have one casualty. That casualty is deceased. All other VA patients and staff are safe. This is an active crime scene, and the shooting incident is under investigation," he said.

The FBI is in charge of the investigation. The Department of Veterans Affairs released a statement saying that it was saddened by what happened.

"We will continue to cooperate fully with military and civilian authorities at Beaumont Army Medical Center. The safety and continued care of our Veterans and the staff will be our focus throughout this situation," the statement read.

A Pentagon official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that a doctor was shot by a gunman, who himself later died from a self-inflicted wound.

The shooter's motive was not immediately clear. The VA facility will be closed tomorrow.

This article make me really sad. I'm so sick of these incidents where a mass shooting happens and the gunman kills himself before the police can get to him. I hope we have better security in the future and are able to prevent these incidents from happening. This reminds me of many other events in history where a situation exactly like this has happened.

  1. Wow, this is really sad. We already are pretty tight on security ever since 9/11, but I agree we could maybe be more prepared. No one expects things like this to happen, so maybe it has come down to us having to expect it more often.

  2. I am wondering why the FBI is getting involved if only one person died and the perpetrator is already dead. This gives me a feeling that this small incident might be a part of something bigger.

  3. I would not consider shooting one man a mass shooting. I agree greater security would be an effective answer and not gun control

  4. I don't understand why these things are still happening. We should have better security by now and better control on guns.
