Detriot Demolition - Elisa Weich p. 4

Since the economic decline of Detroit, buildings around the city have been abandoned and left to deteriorate without caretakers to maintain them. In a particular neighborhood, on a particular street, in a particular house, there has been worry as to the future of the abandoned houses and the trouble they bring to good areas. Abandoned houses allow room for felons, dog fighting arenas, and people who cook drugs to hide. Among other things, these houses have the potential to cause real danger for real people. For example, a Mrs.Van-Tardy on Mount Vernon has been waiting for years for a vacant house in between herself and her mother's house to be demolished so that her teen nieces can walk home without fear at night and unwanted visitors will stop coming around. The dangers mentioned before have all been sighted in the area and are serious concerns for the Van-Tardys. The city had begun working toward a demolition project months ago with the aid of federal funding and finally tore down the deposed building on December 12 of this year. Now all that is left is to wait for clearance to buy the property.

The degenerate state of Detroit is very sad, as it was once a hub for hope in the working world. Beautification efforts are good to see and long over due. The aid of the federal government is positive because it shows that the issue is being recognized and taken care of. These efforts could be the start of a rebound for the city that is much needed.
