Selma -Hadassah Lai

On Sunday, members of the movie "Selma" including Oprah Winfrey gathered in Selma, Alabama to participate in a march to recall one of the bloodiest civil rights chapters in civil rights history. This event took place in honor of the tragic events in Ferguson, where unarmed black men were shot by the police spurring protests and heightening tensions all around the country and even in some places in the world. Marchers held signs that read "March On" and "Vote".

Slavery and the discrimination of African Americans will never be erased from American history. Unfortunately, they play a big part in history. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has created a legacy, began reform, and sparked inspiration. It saddens me how some people today still think that they are above others who only look different than them, it's inhumane. Martin Luther King Jr. day is a day to allow Americans to reflect on the past, and remember the legacy that he left behind. Sure, we struggle with the bill of rights, like the usage of guns, the freedom of speech among many others, but the 13, 14, and 15 amendments are just as important. One can only hope that America will give this people justice and treat everyone as free equals as stated in the Declaration of Independence.

  1. I agree. I believe certain amendments in the constitution are being over looked or not fully obeyed. its important to for everyone to know what the constitutions so they know their rights and can address them when they're not being accepted. What part of equality don't people understand?

  2. Martin Luther King Jr. day allows individuals to reflect upon King's legacy proving that his contributions as an activist will never be forgotten. His actions in society helped America take huge steps towards becoming a place of equality; however, we still have a long way to go.
