Peyton Gatewood- Did Emma Gonzalez admit to bullying school shooter?
article
In March 2018, conspiracy theorists made another attempt to use disinformation in order to discredit gun safety activist Emma González by accusing her of “bullying” her former high school classmate accused of killing fourteen students and three staff members at a month earlier.
Here's what she said in a brief clip that was used as "proof" Gonzalez bullied the shooter: "Since he was in middle school, it was no surprise to anyone who knew him to hear that he was the shooter. Those talking about how we should have not ostracized him? You didn’t know this kid, OK? We did."
But in context, Emma was talking about the warning signs that were never treated. Here's the full thing: "Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities again and again. We did, time and time again. Since he was in middle school, it was no surprise to anyone who knew him to hear that he was the shooter. Those talking about how we should have not ostracized him, you didn’t know this kid. OK, we did. We know that they are claiming mental health issues, and I am not a psychologist, but we need to pay attention to the fact that this was not just a mental health issue. He would not have harmed that many students with a knife."
My hot take-
It is really disturbing that people are going out of their way to make a mass murderer innocent- and to villainize a grief-stricken survivor.. Cruz and others who committed similar crimes (Adam Lanza, Eric Harris, Dylan Klebold, etc) have all gotten some serious defense, sympathizing and even praise. We must ask ourselves why. This boy is not a lone wolf who was bullied to the edge, this is a person who had hate in their heart, untreated mental illness, and access to guns. Cruz is receiving fanmail and sexual letters from young girls who admire him, but why? Because the media and society romanticizes young, mentally ill teenagers who commit acts of homicide and/or suicide. (Like Columbine, 13 Reasons Why, To The Bone, and the abusive, destructive bad boy meets naive girl romance troupe, etc)

I agree, I definitely think that people are shifting their focus on the wrong issue.
ReplyDeleteI agree, they are trying to distract from the real problem, which doesn't solve anything.
