Caroline Carter-Trump-Macron friendship forms despite differences

This week, President Trump will be hosting French president Emmanuel Macron at his first state dinner to celebrate a historic alliance between the two countries. Despite this firm friendship, Trump and Macron's differing views on the Iran Nuclear Deal and global trade issues. Macron believes the deal is strong and worth preserving, while Trump has stated multiple times that it should have never been made. Macron has also requested immunity from American tariffs placed on steel and aluminum, which China has created an oversupply of in the world marketplace, but Trump has yet to promise anything to France. Trump also has pushed withdrawal of troops from Syria as soon as possible, while his French counterpart is not quite so impatient to pull his armies from the country as quickly.

This is similar to past American presidents forming alliances with Soviet leaders toward the close of the Cold War, such as the relationship between Gorbachev and Reagan in the 80's. Despite past tensions and policy differences, they were able to reach some sort of agreement. This new friendship between the two presidents could signal more American (specifically, Trump's) presence in Europe, where he has been fairly unpopular so far.
