The Trump administration is pushing for abstinence only sex-ed, and even though the Department of Health and Human Services doesn’t exclude info about contraception, they now prefer lessons over abstinence. The head of Health and Human services for Minors is also the leader of an abstinence only movement, she stated “the Obama administration ‘normalizes’ teen sex” and that premarital sex should be strongly advocated against. The argument against the, however, is that sexually active teenagers aren’t going to stop and having sex and abstinence only classes are leaving them vulnerable to STIs and pregnancy. A 2007 study, under the obama administration, determined that abstinence only classes didn’t essentially nothing to prevent teen pregnancy or teenage sexual activity.
This relates to the Adolescent Family Life Act (AFLA) of 1981, it was also referred to as “the chastity law”. This encouraged teenagers to postpone sex until marriage and practice ‘self discipline’. AFLA also discouraged abortion and promoted adoption in teen pregnancy situations. I think that abstinence only classes are BS. The age that people are getting married is significantly higher than it used to be, people don’t get married when they are 18 anymore. Are you supposed to wait until you are 32 to have sex for the first time? Abstinence only views are very old world, and pretty unrealistic in my opinion.
