Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Kate Middleton and Prince William, is just two years old and has made history. On Monday, the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to a baby boy. However, this does not change Charlotte’s position in the long line to the thrown on the basis of her gender. “She is the first princess who won’t be overtaken in the line by a younger brother.” This is due to recent legislation, the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013. This law changed he long upheld tradition, stating that the gender of a royal born after October 28, 2011 “does not give that person, or their descendants precedence over anyone else in determining the next monarch”. Prior to this legislation sisters were passed by their younger brothers in the order of succession. Although this act was passed in 2013, it didn’t take effect until 2015 with the birth of Princess Charlotte. This makes unnamed new royal baby the first immediate royal family member to be affected by the changes this act has brought. Princess Charlotte is now fourth in line for the throne, surpassing even Prince Harry.
This legislation mirrors those acts passed in the US during the feminist movement that began to take shape in the 1960s. These include Equal Opportunity Employment Act, outlawing discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sex, religion, race, or national origin. This can also be compared to Title IX, giving women more of an equal opportunity in sports and education. Obviously America has no throne to wait in line for, so we don’t have any legislation being passed to ensure what the Succession of the Crown Act has done. Regardless, this is a great stride taken for women. After all, Queen Elizabeth II has been ruling as a single woman for quite some time now.
that's so interesting that they established this act recently and that charlotte has a real chance with none of her younger male siblings to stand in the way.
