We’re On The Path to an Uninhabitable Eart -Cleo Chaney

People are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that the world could look drastically different within the next 30 years. The average global temperature has already been raised at least 1 degree Celsius since pre-industrial times, which is extremely significant, and the UN wants to limit the change to 1.5 degrees to prevent unimaginable circumstances that the world wouldn’t be equipped to deal with. Even just limiting the global warming will take a significant change in emissions. Right now, the UN projects that by 2040, there will be 200 million refugees due to climate problems, nearly three times the amount we have now. If our global temperature rises 3.7 degrees, (which would not be unprecedented considering where we are right now), we’d be facing damage costs twice of what global wealth is, meaning instead of repairing cities that are destroyed, we’d have to abandon them.

We’ve seen students in Europe taking action regarding climate change, like how student s were involved in the civil Rights movement in the 50s and 60s. I think it’s important for our generation to take political action; however our window for change is so small that the apocalypse of a 3 degree warmer planet could no only be within our lifetime, but within millenials’ and our parents’.
