Man is arrested in kicking an elderly women on a subway as bystanders shot video - Joziah German

A man kicked a 78 year old women multiple times on a subway in New York. The man was filmed, and has been arrested and charged with assault. The video of the abuse has been popularly shared all over social media. The video showed a tall man in glasses, a dark jacket, and a knitted cap forcefully kicking  at the women while on board. Bystanders recording never took action to stop the attack. It is still unclear why the attack happened, and what was occurring between the two. After the attack the women was sitting in a corner crying. As the man was walking off the train he shouted, “WorldStar that” which was a reference to a site with popular videos of altercations and other things. Police identified the man as Marc Gomez. Marc was arrested Saturday, and was charged with multiple accounts of assault and harassment. The women rode one more stop before getting off the train, being met by EMS and treated. She was taken care of at the hospital and was released only suffering minor injuries.

This article written by Faith Karimi, CNN, was published a day after the mans arrest. This was a positive influence to the audience because no one real knew where the man went, and what he could do to someone else in the future. I had no prior knowledge, nor had I heard about this incident before. This article made me think about the Social Security Act of 1935, and how it created basic rights to a person of old age. It gave the elderly insurance against unemployment, and was a law relevant to labor. This women who was hurt was an elderly, and she wasn’t in any kind of work. Because of the social security act, she was able to get the treatment she needed in order to recover from her injuries. It is just good to know that our elderly are being cared for remotely. The audience of this article, is anyone really. I could say it is more directed to New Yorkers who were wondering if the man was stopped, but everyone could wonder that. The purpose and importance of this article is that the bystanders filming, or not, did not do anything to help the women. The 78 year old was obviously unable to defend herself, and no good soul stood up to protect her. All they did was pull out their phones and film. This shows a big fault in our societies today, instead of helping someone out who needs the care and is being injured, people would rather just spectate and see what happens. They are almost afraid to intervene, were as with older generations people would have stepped in to stop it. Just shows how phones are internalizing everyone.
