jude holland - Mark Zuckerburg calls for internet regulation

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook, has called for stricter control on the internet by the US government, and is  is calling for regulators to play a "more active role" controlling content on the internet. He wants to more strictly regulate "harmful content, election integrity, privacy and data portability." The Cambridge Analytica scandal and other example s of companies using the internet in similar ways has caused Zuckerburg to support this way of thinking, as well as the attacks Facebook has come under for failing to delete terrorist videos and accounts as well as failing to repel cyberattacks and the spread of fake news stories on their pages.

Although i support free speech and believe everyone, including companies wishing to sell products on the internet, should have the ability to do so, but i support Zuckerberg's decision because by more strictly regulating the internet, hateful, threatening content can be controlled, as well as the spread of fake news and accounts to manipulate internet uses either politically or financially. The threat of Russian cyberattacks in order to sway internet users politically can also be seen as something that needs to be regulated, in order to preserve our national security.

  1. Emma Burkey: I do agree with what you said about free speech being important, but this still being a good idea; if our national security can be improved by some internet regulation, I think it should be looked into

  2. I also agree with Zuckerberg's decision because regulating the internet will prevent threats and harmful fake news from being spread.
