Isadora Lilly- Trump Still Wants the Wall

After three weeks, Trump has finally come to an agreement to end the longest running government shutdown in U.S. history, announced on Friday as well as passed in a bill by both the Senate and the House. This deal will allow for the 800,000 federal employees who have not received their pay to be fully reimbursed and allowed the chance to catch up on their bills. In his speech Friday, Trump thanked federal workers for their devotion to their work even during the shutdown, and for their help in “making America great again”.

Nevertheless, Trump refuses to give up on his demands concerning border security and the $5.7 billion wall, and has made the current negotiation for the reopening of the government temporary. Trump is therefore giving lawmakers only three weeks (until February 15) to present a compromise regarding border security, while in the meantime continues to justify the creation of the wall.

Trump’s battle for border security is a clear example of nativism, a prominent idea based on the opposition and limitation of the rights of immigrants, especially through political parties such as the 19th century “Know Nothing Party”. This can be compared to Trump’s desire for the building of the border wall as he wishes to oppose immigrants and to exclude and hinder them from becoming U.S. citizens. However, when Mexican immigrants do become integrated in American society, they often work extremely hard, especially taking part in laborious activities and jobs that Americans do not wish to partake in, but you don’t see anyone complaining then, now do you?

  2. Trump needs to get over the wall already! He needs to use the taxpayer dollars for something more important.
