Diverse Democratic Field for 2020 Election - Chloe Meinershagen

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/27/politics/2020-democratic-field-diversity/index.html

The 2020 election field is going to be the most diverse it's ever been for the democratic party. With 8 candidates already confirmed running for president, 7 out of the 8 are women, part of the LGBTQ+ community, not white, or a combination of these things. There's never been more than 3 people that fit into those qualifications that have run simultaneously. This year over 50% of the candidates will be diverse. This doesn't mean that the party can't still elect a straight white male, but it does show changes within the community. The voter population that identifies as Democratic is only 10% straight white and male, while the majority is women (58%), and the other percentage are non white or LGBTQ+. This depicts how the candidates reflect current supporter the democratic party.

Previously to this, I never took into account how changed the Democratic party has become, and it's surprising how many diverse candidates are running this year. The debates this year will be interesting to watch, and it makes me almost worried for the 2020 election.
In America's presidential election of 1836, Martin Van Buren won against 4 different candidates that the Whig party didn't discern which one to condense their votes for, therefore making none of their candidates have a chance at beating Buren. Seeing how many different democratic candidates are already running, I wonder if Trump could be reelected if the Democratic party doesn't have a strong leader that is currently interesting a majority of Democrats, but I guess only time will tell.

  1. It's great how much has changed in politics and especially the Democratic party.

  2. I really liked looking at these percentages, and I'm kind of shocked. I'm also so proud of minority groups rising up to be seen and heard. It's important that the government reflects the people so that all opinions are heard and taken into account.
