How Will Puerto Rico Spend Its $20 Billion -Cleo Chaney

The damage from Hurricane Maria still remains in Puerto Rico, and there are many different opinions on how to deal with repairing the infrastructure on the island. With the $20 billion from the federal government, the Puerto Rican government finally sees a chance to make much needed improvements that, being billions in debt, were before impossible. One of the main focuses of Puerto Ricans is fixing housing. However, there is concern that the money will not be spent in the most beneficial way for the people, so many are organizing to try and have a say in how the funds are used.

After the hurricane in 2017, many of the issues regarding Puerto Rico were brought up. Some view the way the US treats it’s territory as unjust; they believe it should either be made a state or given freedom. Puerto Ricans are without some of the rights of being a US citizen but still have to answer to the federal government. This makes me think of American Imperialism in the late 1800s and early 1900s and the controversy that surrounded it.

  1. I wish the U.S. government would just let Puerto Rico be free already, it'll be a huge weight off their shoulders. The slogan "Land of the Free" is continuing to be contradicting.

  2. It doesn't seem like Puerto Rico is even a major concern to the US government so I think we should just let them be free, since the government doesn't seem to care that much anyway.
