Cleaning New York Filthy Harbor with Oysters - Siobhan Crummey

https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/16/tech/billion-oyster-project/index.html

New York City Council has now proposed a new plan to clean the filthy, polluted harbor, with little to none marine life, with one billion oysters. They believe that the oysters will revive the ecosystem and clean up the pollution over time. The Billion Oyster project has been working with oysters and have found that one adult oyster can cleanse over 50 gallons of water per day. The oyster reefs would also house marine life and help the marine populations re-produce and thrive in the harbor.

This relates to history because the New York City harbor has been polluted for over one hundred years, and it has been effecting daily and marine life. The audience is young students who would like to become involved in the Billion Oyster Project and in their community. The perspective is CNN, and they had an interview with the Project Head and they got to see the project plan first hand. The purpose is to inform and advise, as many other polluted locations around the world could use this and clean our oceans. This is important because our oceans are worse than ever and something needs to be done.

  1. This is definitely an interesting solution to a major problem. I'm curious to see if they will follow through with plan as it seems to be the least threatening solution.
