Layla Maynard: Lives Lost in Oklahoma

Summary: After being taken into custody, Acacia Chambers, facing four counts of second-degree murder, has revealed the fact that she has recently suffered from mental illness, which runs in her family. At a homecoming parade at OSU last weekend, Chambers was seen driving into a crowd full of friends and families getting ready for the nights festivities. Four people were killed and many wait in critical conditions at a local hospital in Oklahoma.

Analysis: This was a new story to read because when we hear about incidents like this taking place, it almost always has something to do with some sort of mental illness and gun control (i.e. Columbine). However, this unfortunate event had nothing to do with gun control. Sometimes we realize that poor decisions some people make have no way of being prevented by society as a whole.

  1. I wish there was a way to prevent people with mental illness from getting into trouble like this. In a situation like this, I honestly feel like it wasn't completely her fault. She really had no control of her mind but there should be ways to prevent this.

  2. I agree with Becca. The girl should've been helped to prevent something like this from happening. Of course bad events are sometimes inevitable, but to look a little bit of help and attention could of prevented this saddens me. The mentally ill are not crazy and deserve as much attention as someone who is physically ill.

  3. Matthew Homsher 9th- I wish someone could have been there to prevent this. I hope she doesn't suffer harsh charges for this accident.
