Chipotle closing and e coli scares - Tymie Jadagu 6th P

Summary: Chipotle has had to close some of it's stores in Washington and Oregon due to the bacteria E Coli being found in it's food. No deaths have been reported, but 8 victims are currently in the hospital seeking treatment. There have been 19 cases reported. E coli can be a helpful bacteria, that Aids in digestion, but when it becomes an infection, can cause severe diarrhea and vomiting. It usually is caused by eating human or animal feces. Other common food borne bacteria outbreaks include listeria and salmonella.
Analysis: This reminds me of the recent blue bell listeria outbreak, in which they had to recall all blue bell products, and production in certain cities is just now beginning. It also calls to light the condition that the colonist had to endure. They built their towns and lives from the ground up, and often times, did not practice proper hygiene. Many colonists died on the account of they had bacteria related illnesses they had no cure for at the time. It also showcases, the progress America, and the rest of the world has made in medicine. In colonial times, there was no cure for bacterial infections, and they often died because of them. Now thanks to modern medicine, safety is only a Doctor's visit away. We also now have laws that regulate the safety and cleanliness of resturaunts and the safety of food and medicine alike that we put into our bodies.

  1. It's ridiculous how easy it is for bacteria to infiltrate our foods. Cases like this make me nervous to trust manufactured food products at all, -Sophie Kurzius (8)

  2. I agree with Sophie! It is crazy to see that a place, that I go to all the time, can sell food that contains these harmful bacteria.

  3. I feel so bad for the managers and employees! Not only is this effecting the customers that have been effected, but I'm sure a lot of people have been laid off because of it, too.

  4. Due to new food processing techniques, E-coli and other food borne illnesses have become more common. I am glad that Chipotle caught this fast and that no one has died because of it, but changes should be made so that situations like this do not happen in the first place. Chipotle should stop buying food from wherever the E-coli originated from, and that place should take another look at their safety standards.

  6. It's not surprising when things like this happen in big food chains, because it really is so easy for contaminations to spread through them, but it is scary. Hopefully Chipotle works to get this under control so that more people don't have to suffer.

  8. It's surprising that there have been so many cases and things are just now starting to happen. It will be interesting to see people's reaction to the outbreak. When bluebell was starting to sell ice cream again people were going crazy over it even though it killed people. Honestly I'd rather live than eat ice cream. -Mattie Whisler 9th period Flex

    1. Yes, i also find it really strange that all these cases of contaminated food have become more and more frequent. I wonder if these contaminations have occurred because these companies have started valuing cheap rather than healthy. I hope if that was the case they learn their lessons that cheap, dangerous food will hurt you in the long run. (Alejandra Hernandez 6th Period)
