One of four Northern White Rhinos left in the world had to be euthanized today in San Diego. Nola, a 41 year old White Rhino, who was a resident at the San Diego Zoo since 1989, had medical problems that caused her to need surgery. On November 13, she had surgery, but last week her health began to deteriorate. Over the last day she only got worse so vets decided to euthanize her. Her death is a loss to not only the San Diego Zoo, but to the world as she was part of an endangered species. The other three Rhinos reside in Kenya and they are also elderly, but the SD Zoo plans to put some Northern White Rhino embryos in six Southern White Rhinos in the next decade or so to help preserve the species.
This historically reminds me of when the Dodo birds went extinct, but of course nothing was done for them because people were so ignorant of how big the world was and how often a species could reproduce. This has happened with many species that we could or maybe couldn't bring back from endangerment. I think they are trying their best to bring this species back, but it is just a matter of trying to get more members of the species, not preserve it. It's conservation vs restoration.
i agreee need to relaize exactly how hard it is to bring back a species. -Bernadette NEgrete
ReplyDeletewe need to treat animals like we treat ourselves or else a lot of animals will go extinct
ReplyDeleteKenley Turner- This is so sad. and yet poaching still exists??? how can that be acceptable to anyone??
ReplyDeleteIt is very sad that this species is almost extinct. Although they can use embryos to try to keep this species alive, it wont be the same as the original species. --Claudia Anthony
