Just today, one of America's most popular comic book authors, passed away at the age of 95. A CNN article written by Todd Leopold, Lisa Respers France, and Brian Lowry that the cause of death is currently unknown. In their article, the authors discuss Lee's life, what he was known for, and several adages he seemed to adhere to, alongside the a quote from an interview with the Washington post in which Lee revealed why he wrote comic books:
"...I began to realize: entertainment is one of the most important things
in people's lives. Without it they might go off the deep end. I feel that
if you're able to entertain people, that you're doing a good thing."
What Stan Lee said about entertainment wasn't always true. In fact, entertainment played very little role in life until the rise and development of mass leisure in the mid 1800s. And as mass leisure grew, so did people's fondness for the characters they saw in operas and plays, then in fiction and comics, and eventually on television and in the movies. Stan Lee is one of the people that the population migrates towards because of his dynamic personality and ability to entertain people.
Rest in peace Stan Lee; you will be missed.
