American-Israeli Teenager Is Sentenced to 10 Years for Bomb Hoaxes
Summary
A 19 year old man was arrested and sentence to time in prison for selling a service online in which he sends threats to schools, people, airliners, etc. He started when he was 18 and continued these actions for 2 years, amassing over $800,000 in profits from extortion, fraud, bomb hoaxes, and money laundering. His lawyers and parents tried to defend his actions by saying that he is autistic and has a brain tumor that prohibits him from distinguishing right from wrong, but the doctors that were consulted concluded that he has no such tumor and does know the difference between right and wrong. The judge that presided over this case decided to take his autism in account and took 7 years off of his sentence, but his parents believe that the government failed their son. They think that the Israeli government should send him to rehabilitation centers for help, not prison.
Analysis
The article was written on Thursday November 22, 2018 in Jerusalem. This means that the reporter is very close to the event and might have more up-to-date information that others on the other side of the globe. Before reading this, I had already known about the bomb threats that shut down airlines and the blackmail to senators, but I didn't know much of the details about the person that committed such terrible crimes. This relates to US history when Delaware state senator, Ernesto Lopez was blackmailed for condemning the anti-semitism hoaxes by the same person that made these fake threats in early 2017. The audience of this article is the entire world, because this man affected so many people everywhere, but also the people who were connected to those threatened by the man. The article was written by Isabel Kershner who is a correspondent in Jerusalem that covers Israeli and Palestinian politics and society. This article was written to inform the people that this man who has made over 2,000 hoax bomb calls and threats is finally sentence to prison for 10 years. This is important because in this day, we deal with threats and bombings and mass shootings on a weekly basis, and we should not have to live in fear of people like this man.
