It's hard to believe it's actually been almost a year since the parkland shooting that took the lives of seventeen people. As the anniversary approaches, survivors and family reflected on what has changed, both in the country at large and in their own personal lives. All have been devastated in the community, despite the passing of time. Many both noted the progress made by the March For Our Lives and the movement for stronger gun control laws while acknowledging the frequency it feels that shootings have been occurring as of late, feeling almost as if theres been at least one per week.
This era, in terms of gun violence, heavily reminds me of the time immediately after Sandy Hook. Both then and now felt like a tipping point, like if we were ever going to see improvement it would be now. Both reminded Americans that shootings in a free, first world country of this frequency is not normal. However, I fear that history is repeating itself and we are once again growing accustomed and numb to shooting even as they increase in their frequency. The movement has gained steam and traction, just like after sandy hook and has become a decisive factor in elections and campaigns. The question now is, will it be enough? Will change come or will this issue fade into the background once again?
I think gun laws should be stricter and I hope as a whole we can make sure that this tragedy can be prevented.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that so many more mass shooting occurred after this and the nationwide movements for gun reform laws makes me question whats it gonna take for the government to do something about this. -adriana chavez
ReplyDeleteI hope this problem can reach some sort of solution in the near future. People should not be dying in places that are supposed to be safe.
