Following the recent revelations over the extreme circumstances the Rohingya were placed in and were not protected from in Myanmar, including many massacres and forced migration from their native land, for humanitarian leader Aung San Suu Kyi has had her awards removed from her. It is believed she was aware of the atrocities being committed by the security forces of Myanmar, but she refrained from taking any action whatsoever, leaving many to suffer under the reign of the government that she made great strides to make from the former military junta. This deliberate oversight has been seen as a greatly shameful act by the international community at large.
Reuters wrote this article, and they have proven to be an extremely viable source and have been covering the Rohingya crisis extremely closely. This is a tragic revelation to unfold in the world, especially since Suu Kyi was seen as a total Juggernaut against tyranny in Southeast Asia. However, it is important that this comes to light, because it reminds us that those who may seem to be the biggest humanitarian impossible is capable of being a bystander to the violations of over a million people's human rights.
This event unfolding strikes an unnerving parallel to the leak of the pentagon papers in the 1960s relating to the atrocities committed by American soldiers in Vietnam and Cambodia. In both cases, those who were caught within these rather incriminating scandals were leaders of the public who were trusted with some of the highest offices in both nations and to be extremely careful with the lives of everyone. Both of these events also referenced massacres and various other crimes against humanity committed in Southeast Asia. These awful crisis can happen anywhere, here or elsewhere, and it's important to remember that.
