On Sunday, US agents fired tear gas at migrants at the San Ysidro port of entry between Tijuana and San Diego. Over 5,000 migrants have been camping in Tijuana hoping to apply for asylum in the US. Evidently, people would cluster around the border ever so often, and US border agents would disperse them with tear gas. Although those who were sprayed were mainly adults, there were lots of children in the surrounding areas.
Trump is known for his anti-immigrant sentiments, and I would definitely consider him a Nativist. He is very xenophobic in things his says and his policies--from his harsh stance on illegal immigration, the Muslim ban from 2017, and all of the fear-mongering about "the Caravan." Reflecting on these beliefs, I think it's fair to say that he could have been a member of the Know-Nothing party during the Antebellum Era. The Know-Nothing party centered around Nativist principles in a reaction to a surge of immigrants (esp. Irish).
Also- tear gas was used a lot in World War II, and many international treaties banned its use in warfare. Why can the US (and other countries) use it for riot control?
